I kind of feel like it also needs to be said that just because your life is not a living hell every single day does not mean that you don’t have a mental disorder.

It’s not fair to say “oh, I saw them laughing yesterday, they can’t possibly be depressed!”

Yeah, Internet self-diagnoses are usually a whole lot of bullshit, but there are loads of people out there who aren’t diagnosed at all because of the stigma and fear attached to it.

I agree with the first part of this image, but the second part frustrates me. I struggled with anxiety and depression for years, but I never got official help for it because I thought, “I’m capable of functioning for the most part. I can’t have a mental illness because I’m just not suffering enough.” I could have gotten past this years ago, but I was deluded into believing that since I could smile, laugh, or interact with other people, my problems weren’t real, weren’t valid, and didn’t deserve acknowledgement and treatment.

So yeah, a lot of people tend to be overdramatic and say they have disorders that they don’t, but to say that everyone with a mental disorder has an unbearable life is not fair to people who do have a mental illness that’s just not as obvious.

Sorry for the rant that likely makes very little sense. This just bothers me.

The thing about the entire second half of the post is that some people might actually have those “disorders” or whatever you call them, but it’s just to a small degree that it isn’t destructively compulsive. Therefor by saying so they aren’t trying to be cute, or negative to those with destructively compulsive disorders, they’re just saying they might have a minor form of it…

When you watch Torchwood there is a warning at the very beginning that some scenes may offend or disturb people, so if you allow your children to sit and watch it with you that’s your responsibility, it’s not ours anymore. We kissed, we held each other, we lay on top of each other in bed… and there were lots of complaints about that. Nobody complained that I was shot in the head four times, there were burning people in ovens, that I was stabbed by a mob of 50 people hundreds of times, and I was hanging dripping my blood in a pit. So that’s what confuses me, because you’re not complaining about gay sex, you’re complaining about two men kissing. And it’s 2011. And people say, “Well why should we have that on television?” Because the BBC have to represent the greater public — and there are gay people out there who pay their television license. For people to complain, that’s your prerogative — but you know what, none of them turned it off! They were just embarrassed because it put them in a position where they had to explain things to their kids or their family which probably should have been explained a long time ago.
